About:240-hour Visa-free Transit in Wuhan

My family and I will be transiting through Wuhan. JFK-->WUH-->KUL and return HKG-->WUH-->JFK.

My question is do we need a transit visa if our stay is less than 8 hours in Wuhan? We all have US Passports. Second question is in regards to the 144 hour visa free stay. If I understand correctly, if we booked a layover for 2-3 days in WUH part of our itinerary, instead of just layover, would we be able to explore Wuhan free of visa? Thank you.

Thank you for the quick reply. What if we transit same way in Guangzhou instead of Wuhan? Does a 144 hr free transit visa apply in this case as well to explore Guangzhou? Thanks

Omar, you are perfectly allowed to do all that you have mentioned and you don't need any kind of visa.

Your first stop in Wuhan will be covered by 24 hour visa free transit and you don't need any kind of visa. You will just declare at check-in in New York that you will travel to Kuala Lumpur via Wuhan using 24 hour visa free transit. After a short inspection of your tickets, you will be allowed to board the plane. Here you will inform yourself whether your luggage will be tagged all the way to Kuala Lumpur. I'm convinced that this will be a case, but you should ask just for a case.

Upon your arrival in Wuhan, you will just clear the formalities and after a bit longer waiting proceed to Kuala Lumpur.

During your second stop in Wuhan, you are perfectly allowed to stay up to 144 hours because you will use 144 hour visa free transit. You will declare at check-in in Hong Kong that you will travel to New York via Wuhan using 144 hour visa free transit. They will check your tickets and shortly after, you will be in the plane.

Upon your arrival in Wuhan, you will approach 144 hour visa free transit counter where you will fill out the blue form. Shortly after, you will get a sticker in your passport and you will be allowed to exit the airport.

You should print out your flight tickets and also your accommodation booking confirmation for Wuhan and have those printouts with you.

By the way, it is quite possible or even quite probable that you will have to collect your luggage and recheck for your flight to Kuala Lumpur, but this is not a problem because you will just approach 24 hour visa free transit counter upon your landing in Wuhan where you will apply for a temporary entry permit. After that, you will collect your luggage, make a recheck and wait for your onward flight at the boarding gate. I cannot guarantee, but I encourage you to ask China Southern about this detail. OK, it is not of such great importance because you have enough time during your layover, but just to be well informed.
