Ana, you are eligible for visa free transit option in principle. Why do I say in principle? Because you have mentioned that the portion of your itinerary is, among other details:
Zagreb - Shanghai
and once again
Shanghai - Zagreb
Both of us know that there are no direct flights between the two cities, so I advise you to look at your itinerary carefully and to see where your stops, between Zagreb and Shanghai and vice versa, are. This is very important detail. For example, if your flight is:
Zagreb - Doha - Shanghai - X country different than both Qatar and mainland China
and back
X country different than both Qatar and mainland China - Shanghai - Doha - Zagreb
Then you are perfectly eligible for 144 hour visa free transit during your first stop in Shanghai and for 24 hour visa free transit for your second stop.
Anyway, if you have an additional stop within mainland China, then you need a Chinese tourist (L) visa obtained in advance.
Your separate tickets are fine, but don't forget to print them out and to have those printouts with you. Everywhere you are asked about visa or similar, you will just state that you will travel to X country via Shanghai using 144 hour visa free transit. On your way back, you will tell that you will travel to Croatia via Shanghai using 24 hour visa free transit.
One more detail. Since you have mentioned that you will have separate tickets, which is fine, I hope that you have left enough time for your transfer in Shanghai on your flight back home. You have to know, that you will have to apply for a temporary entry permit upon your arrival in Shanghai at 24 hour visa free transit counter to be allowed to collect your luggage and to perform a recheck for your next flight. Shanghai airport could be quite time consuming.
