About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

144 transit visa

Hello, i hope you can help!

I am travelling from Tokyo to Shanghai for 5 days then on to Australia - can i use the transit visa program instead of actual visa?

Yes, you can. If this is your itinerary:

Tokyo - Shanghai - Australia

And you don't have any additional landing between the mentioned places, you are definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit and you don't need any kind of visa.

By the way, you should use correct terminology because this is not a transit visa. In reality, this is not a visa at all. This is a transit without a visa. Just use 144 hour visa free transit at check-in in Tokyo where you will tell that you will travel to Australia via Shanghai using 144 hour visa free transit!
