Travelling with Kids to Bangkok via China, do i need visa

I have 2 separate tickets. Amsterdam-Shanghai arriving 23/12 (arriving in the morning) and Shanghai-Bangkok 24/12 (leaving late evening), total 36hrs layover. I want to spend the day in Shanghai before flying onwards to Bangkok. Can i (and my kids) enter Shanghai without a visa? My tickets were bought separately.

Yes, if Shanghai is your only stop within mainland China, you and your kids are perfectly eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai area. Separate tickets are fine.

This is valid, if your citizenship belong among 53 eligible countries, of course.
