About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Change planes in Xi'an and Guangzhou

Coming from Los Angeles, I change planes in Xi'an in route to Guangzhou, then fly to Vientiane. I think impossible to take advantage of 144 hour visa free stay in Guangzhou, as I land for 3 hours in Xi'an to change planes. Am I thinking correctly? I would need to fly directly to Guangzhou from Los Angeles? Thanks, Kim

You understand correctly. Two stops automatically limit you to 24 hours transit in China.
