6 Months validity of Passport

Is the 6 months period of passport validity mandatory?

My Passport's validity is about 4 months after the date of travel and my stay in China will be for only 3 weeks

When you apply for the China visa, your passport has to be valid for at least six months. After you get the visa, you can travel to China even though your passport's remaining validity is only four months.
