Your itinerary is:
X country (I assume Canada) - Shanghai - Beijing - Bali
Your entire transit time within China is:
Less than 24 hours
Under the condition that you will arrive to Shanghai from the country that is different than Indonesia and under the condition that your flight from Beijing to Bali will not have a landing of any kind in the country from where will you arrive in Shanghai, you are definitely eligible for 24 hour visa free transit and you don't need any kind of visa.
You will print out your flight tickets and have the printouts with you. Also, you will declare at check-in in X country that you will travel to Bali via China using 24 hour visa free transit. After a short inspection of your flight tickets, you will be allowed to board the plane.
Upon arrival in Shanghai, you will approach 24 hour visa free counter where you will also present your flight tickets and you will be granted a temporary entry permit that will allow to exit the airport and to proceed with your domestic flight to Beijing after an overnight. It is also advisable to have an accommodation booking confirmation in hard copy upon your landing in Shanghai.
You are allowed to visit the Great Wall, but you should be very well informed to do it logistically and to return on time for your flight to Bali.
