144 hour visa qualification

Hi, I won’t be able to secure a Chinese visa and decided to switch up my itinerary. I will now try to do 144 hours. My question is...can I travel from SEA TO PVG, then back to SEA after the time period is up? Or can I travel from SEA to PVG, then back from PVG to YVR? I need to make sure Canada counts as country C. Thank you!

SEA-PVG-SEA will obviously not work since there is no third country in the itinerary. Canada counts as country C but you have to make sure it is the first landing outside China (i.e., SEA-PVG-YVR works but SEA-PVG-SEA-YVR does not)

Thank you! My other question is...can I go from SEA, have a 20 hour layover in Tokyo, then 144 hours in Shanghai before going back to SEA?

It is very simple: only the flights immediately before and immediately after Shanghai are relevant. Nothing else on your itinerary matters. Japan-Shanghai-USA is obviously ok. Japan-Shanghai-Japan is obviously not ok.
