About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

144 Hour Visa Transit - Apply Online or at Shanghai Airport

I am planning a trip with my wife to New Zealand and my outbound flights are London to Shanghai - Pudong (2 nights in a downtown Shanghai Hotel) then Pudong to Auckland. (I come back via HK so I'm ok with the return). But I see there is an Online Application for the 144 hr Visa Transit Waiver as well as going to the "General Station of Immigration Inspection" which I assume is at the airport. Which is best to do and if its easier online my trip is not until March 2020, so when should I make the application? Thanks

Ian, I will simplify this procedure, so it will be very clear to you.

First of all, you will print out your flight tickets and the printouts with you. Also, just forget about online application because it is much easier and more convenient if you apply manually upon your arrival.

Since you will fly from London, you will declare at check-in at London airport that you will fly from London to New Zealand via Shanghai using 144 hour visa free transit. You will present your tickets and be allowed to board the plane.

Upon your arrival in Shanghai, you will ask, and it is well signposted, for 144 hour visa free transit counter where you will fill out the blue form and hand over your onward ticket to New Zealand. After a short inspection, you will get a sticker in your passport and be allowed to exit the airport.

As you can see, although it can appear at first sight to be something very complicated, in reality it is relatively simple procedure. In other words, you don't need to announce anything to anybody about your intention to travel on visa free transit. You will tell this for the very first time at the moment of your check-in in London.
