About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Layover in Shanghai, China

Hi. I will be flying from United States (Chicago) to Shanghai to Bali. There is a 18 hour layover. I planned to see some of Shanghai. What is best for me to be granted entry into the country. I am very confused.

If you want to practically guarantee entry into China then get a visa. Otherwise you can rely on 24 hours transit without visa, but entry to China is at the discretion of the immigration officer. With an 18 hour connection and a hotel booking, your chances to be admitted should be good.
