About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Astana to Mel

Hi
My family will be flying from Astana (Kazakhstan) to Mel Australia in Dec. 2019. I have Australian passport. We will have two transits one in Urumqi for 2 hours and one in Guangzhou 13 hours. In the return route will have 5 hours in Guangzhou and 2 hours in Urumqi.
Do I need a visa in any of these trips? I don’t want to go out of the airport.

In theory if your family's connecting flights in Urumqi are within 2 hours, as you have mentioned, they would be eligible for 24 hour visa free transit. Anyway, I'm afraid that they will have to collect their luggage after arrival from Astana and make a recheck, so this would require an issuing of a temporary entry permit. Even this detail would be doable, but now we have to come to the start in Astana and ask ourselves whether the authorities in Astana will allow them to board the plane? Urumqi is indeed a delicate location and as far as I know with certainty is that only the flights that have Urumqi as an intermediate landing, but proceed on a single flight number are eligible for 24 hour visa free transit. Having all the mentioned in mind I honestly recommend obtaining a double entry Chinese transit (G) visa.
