About:Shanghai 15-day Visa-free Policy for Cruise Tour Groups

Are we eligeble for the 24 hour visa free Shanghai stop

Hi,

We are travelling on a cruise from Japan in November 2019. Stopping for 14 hours in Shanghai.
We are both Norwegian citizens with Norwegian passports.
Our last port in Japan before passing to Shanghai is Kagoshima.
Arriving Shanghai 06:00 am and departing 22 pm.
The ship then travels to JeJu South Korea for technical stop before going to Keelung City Taiwan.

We have been informed by the cruise company that we will most likely need a Visa, but from my understanding it looks like we might not. Can you please advice? And also, if we don`t need a Visa what offical channel can we contact to get it in writing so we don`t have a problem when embarking the cruise in Japan.

Thanks and regards from 2 worried travelers from Norway.

WORRY NO MORE.
I am on the same ship and happy to report to you that Celebrity Official has confirmed that YOU DO NOT NEED CHINA VISA to board the ship in Yokohama. The cruise line is ambiguous and devious. If you call customer service, they will tell you “you need to China Visa”. I AM FURIOUS with Celebrity for implying that all cruisers need Single-Entry Chinese Visa. Here is a direct quote of a Celebrity Official:

“The recommendation for China is that guests secure a visa. While not required for this specific itinerary and stop in Shanghai, China has been known to change the approach for the visa-free program.
If guests elect to proceed with the visa free option – there is no issue given this itinerary. However, it is subject to review by the authorities upon arrival and at their discretion it could be approved/denied.”

Thank you all for your reply. That is what I had figured as well. But since all sites states that you need to check with your in country Chinese embassy I did that. And they told me to ask the cruise company if I required Visa or not.

Wanted to double check since Norway is the only Schengen country not eligible for the 72 hours Visa.

And in any case if you opt to not go onshore in Shanghai you wouldn’t require any Visa, to my understanding. But now we can hopefully get onshore on a tour. We have been to Shanghai before so would like to see more of the city this time.

Again,
Thanks and regards for your replies to this thread.

Your itinerary is as it should be for 24 hour visa free transit:

Kagoshima (Japan - country A) - Shanghai (China - country B) - Jeju (South Korea - country C)

Your timing is as it should be for 24 hour visa free transit:

Shanghai scheduled arrival at 06:00 - Shanghai scheduled departure at 22:00

You are perfectly and without any doubt eligible for 24 hour visa free transit in Shanghai area and you don't need any kind of visa.
