About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

We have an overnight layover in Shanghai (SFO -> Shanghai -> Thailand

We have an overnight layover in Shanghai (SFO -> Shanghai -> Thailand on the start of our trip (Jan 22), what is required to leave the airport to stay at a hotel?

On our return to home in the USA we have a 4 day layover in Shanghai. Our itinerary is as planned:

(Feb 12) Phuket Thailand --> Shanghai (4 day layover)
Shanghai --> San Francisco, USA

I would like to confirm that this is eligible for the 144 hour visa. We are traveling as a family with two children. We plan on staying at the Four Seasons in Shanghai. Do we need to be part of a tour group? Can we leave the actual city of Shanghai, and if so, what regions can we visit? Thank you very much, this website is extremely informative.

Thank you! One more question.... We are a family of 4 with 2 children aged 12 and 8, why is it so difficult to find a hotel room in Shanghai that will allow 4 people? Do you have any suggestions? Am I doing something wrong?

Both of your itineraries are definitely eligible for visa free transit:

- During your first stop, you will be eligible for 24 hour visa free transit in Shanghai. To be allowed to exit the airport and to enjoy your accommodation, you are advised to book your accommodation in advance and to have a confirmation in hard copy. You will apply for temporary entry permit upon your landing in Shanghai and with the enclosed accommodation confirmation, you will be granted the mentioned entry permit. You don't need to be part of a tour group. You will do this as individuals.

- During your second stop in Shanghai, you will enjoy 144 hour visa free transit because your itinerary is definitely eligible. Again, you don't need to be a part of a tour group.

Please, keep in mind to have the printouts of your flight tickets along with the accommodation booking confirmation.

You are definitely allowed to explore very wide area around Shanghai. In reality, this area consists of Shanghai city, Zhejiang province and Jiangsu province. The area of the mentioned three entities is roughly the same as the area of US states of Nebraska or Kansas, but with "slightly" larger population of about 162 millions :)

It is true that the family rooms are not exactly frequent, but you should use Agoda website and apply the filters like "family traveler" and "prefer family room". You will definitely find several suitable options for your needs.
