About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Is the following itinerary qualified for "144 hr visa free"?

Cruise from USA to Japan, to Beijing, to Shanghai, then take a train or plane to Hong Kong.

No, you cannot enjoy any kind of visa free transit scheme with the mentioned itinerary because you are traveling through two different Chinese transit areas in a row (Beijing and Shanghai). This is only allowed in case if your itinerary lasts less than 24 hours. Anyway, as US citizens you are eligible for 10 year multiple entry Chinese visa if obtained while you are still in US.
