Flying from JFK New york with a 4 hour layover in Shanghai PVG flying into Bangkok Thailand.

Do I need a visa for my layover in Shanghai before flying into Bangkok, Thailand?

No, you don't need any kind of visa because your itinerary, under the condition that you have mentioned your all stops, is definitely eligible for 24 hour visa free transit.
