About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Any change to 144 visa free rule?

Australian citizens, we will be cruising from Japan to Shanghai via Korea. In Shanghai will be joining short tour then to pudong airport same day for flight to Sydney Australia with short transit in Hong Kong. I've been told should qualify for 144 hr visa free but wish to confirm.

Your itinerary is eligible for visa free transit scheme, but I think that you will be eligible for 24 hour visa free transit and not 144. The reason is simple... You have mentioned that you will depart from Shanghai during the same day when you arrive in Shanghai by cruise. So, if your entire transit time, from your scheduled arrival by cruise, until your scheduled departure by plane is less than 24 hours, you are eligible for 24 hour visa free transit, but if your entire transit time is just a minute longer than 24 hours, then you will enjoy 144 hour visa free transit. In reality, it is totally the same in your case. Whether it is 24 or 144 hour TWOV, you will be able to accomplish your itinerary according to your plans.
