Do I need a visa?

A USA Citizen, flying to Shanghai for 1 day, then cruising to Japan; returning to Shanghai on the ship and spending two nights before returning to the USA.

You are eligible for 144h visa-free transit for both layovers in Shanghai as llong as you don't have stopovers in other mainland China cities.
