About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

UK-Shanghai-Hong Kong

Hi, we are flying from the UK to Shanghai (2 days) and then on to Hong Kong. Do you know if we are required to apply for the 144 hour transit visa exemption before we travel? The gov.uk website directs us to do so but the website referred to does not give HK as an option for a third country destination. Just want to make sure we are 100% okay to travel on this basis and apply for the exemption when we get to shanghai? Thank you.

If your itinerary:

UK - Shanghai - Hong Kong

Does not have any additional stops of any kind, you are definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai area. Also, you are really advised not to use the online application because you will do everything you need manually. You should print out your flight tickets and have them in hard copy ready to be presented to the relevant authorities. During your check-in in UK you will just declare that you will travel to Hong Kong via Shanghai using 144 hour visa free transit. After short check of your tickets, you will be allowed to board the plane. Also, upon your landing in Shanghai, you will approach 144 hour TWOV counter where you will fill out a blue form. Shortly after, you will be allowed to exit the airport and to spend your time as you wish.
