72-hr Visa-free transit versus using valid Chinese visa in passport

I got a 10 yr, category M, multiple entry Chinese visa last year for a trip to Shanghai. I will be doing an overnight layover in Beijing next month en route from Mongolia to Texas, USA. Can I use my valid Chinese visa or should I go through the lines at the airport for a 72-hr visa-free entry?
