Chinese visa versus 144 hours visa

i am travelling from Australia to Hong Kong and then I will travel to Shanghai and Beijing staying in each city 3 days.

Do I need to apply for 144 hours visa for Shanghai and for Chinese visa for Beijing or can I apply for Chinese visa covering both cities (Shanghai and Beijing)?

You need a Chinese visa, and it will cover both cities.

The 144-hour visa-free transit allows you to stay at only one city of China. if you want to travel to both Shanghai and Beijing, you have to apply for a tourist visa. Or you could design your route like this: Australia-Shanghai-Hong Kong , Hong Kong- Beijing- Australia, Then you can visit the two city without a visa.
