About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Can I visit and leave the airport in Beijing or Shanghai?

I am a US citizen and I am coming from the US to visit Bangkok and Bali for 5 days. For the way home, I want to book a single ticket from Bangkok to Beijing or Shanghai. I’d like to visit either city for about 20 hours and fly home from Beijing or Shanghai to US. So the trip home would be either Bangkok-Beijing then Beijing-US or Bangkok-Shanghai then Shanghai-US. 2 single/separate tickets. Do I need a visa to leave the airport and visit either city? I want to try and see the Great Wall. Is there a risk that I won’t get in because I came initially to visit Thailand and Indonesia?

Lisa, your best bet is to book two separate tickets, but to make your itinerary at least an hour longer than 24 hours. Why? Simply because in case if your transit time in, for example, Beijing is longer than 24 hours, you are automatically eligible for 144 hour visa free transit and the entire procedure is more straightforward. In reality, even if you rely on 24 hour visa free transit and using two separate tickets, you will be fine with the ability to exit the airport because when separate tickets are in question, you will be granted an entry permit for certain.

Using any, 24 or 144 hour visa free transit schemes, you are perfectly allowed to enjoy your time in and around Beijing and to visit the Great Wall also. Your previous visits are irrelevant. Everything that matters is your itinerary an your citizenship. You are fine in both. You should just take care that your flights to and from China don't have any additional landing within mainland China of any kind.
