About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Travel from USA to Beijing, stay 72 hours, than Beijing to Thailand, than back to china back to US

So question.. right now I have round trip flight to Beijing from US Oct. 18-Oct. 27th. I plan on flying in, using the 72 hour visa free, and flying out the 20th or 21st to Bangkok, Thailand for a few days. Since I'm Round Trip out of Beijing, I will fly back to Beijing on night of 25th, and fly out on the 27th (at 1PM local time) back to US. Is it possible to apply for 72 hour visa again for the second time on the way out of Beijing back to US? So I wouldn't need to pay for visa at all?

Question 2: if I choose the visa free 72 hour option, does that mean I have to stay strictly in Beijing? Can I do day trips/tours outside of it?

Thanks for your help

The first detail. There is no more 72 hour visa free transit in Beijing because it was replaced by more generous 144 hour visa free transit a couple of years ago.

Answer 1:

Your itinerary is perfectly eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in Beijing twice. Of course, this is valid if you have mentioned all your stops within the itinerary.

Answer 2:

Traveling on 144 hour visa free transit means that you are allowed to explore quite large area consisting of Beijing and Tianjin cities and Hebei province. This is an area roughly equivalent to the US state of Kansas. It means that you can make quite a long journeys and one among them could be to very nice city of Chengde in the northern part of Hebei province.
