About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Shanghai Cruise

I am taking a cruise in June 2020. I am not sure if what visas I will need for this trip. Can you please help.

Monday: Fly from USA direct to Tokyo. We will spend a fews days there.
Saturday: Fly from Tokyo to Shanghai. Arrive approximately 6PM. We will spend night near cruise terminal.
Sunday: Leave for Cruise to Japan. Plan to arrive at terminal around 11AM.

Following Sunday: Arrive back in Shanghai from cruise. (last port Tokyo). We will go directly to airport and fly back to Tokyo in route to USA.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thank you.

You need a tourist (L) visa with at least two entries.

If I change itinerary from getting off cruise and flying back to Japan to flying to South Korea. Would this require a visa?

I would juts like to add that as US citizen, you are eligible for 10 year Chinese multiple entry visa and this is by far your best visa solution.

No, but you will not gem much with such a move because the problem is also with your first part of the itinerary:

US - Japan - Shanghai - Japan

The rule for visa free transit is very simple. It says, only the immediate points before and after your Chinese destination matter. In your case, both immediate points are in Japan and that is not eligible.

You are right for your second part of the journey. If you decide to fly to South Korea instead for Japan, this portion will look exactly like this:

Japan - Shanghai - South Korea

As you can see, the immediate points are in different countries and that is by definition a transit.

If you could only make a change with your first part of your itinerary, to look like:

South Korea - Shanghai - Japan

That would be also eligible.

Of course, such a correction would require a drastic change of your itinerary, so you should really think what is more convenient to you, to change your itinerary or to obtain a visa.
