Hello, I am a US citizen traveling through Beijing into Sydney. I will be in Beijing for 20 hours. Do i need to apply for a visa?

Jonathan, if you depart from a country different from Australia, you will be eligible for the 24h visa-free transit of China, so that no visa is required.
