About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Layover in Nanjing

Hello,
We (Canadians) are travelling from Bangkok to Vancouver via Nanjing. Our layover is 5 hours in Nanjing and we have been informed of a three hour process for people who are transitting where they take your passport and follow you around until you check in again. Would the 72 hour transit visa help with not having to do this waste of time?
Thank you

John, if you have only 5 hours layover in Nanjing, you are covered by 24 hour visa free transit and you cannot use 72 hour visa free transit (by the way, Nanjing is in the Shanghai transit area where 144 hour TWOV has replaced 72 hour TWOV a couple of years ago), so you will have to pass the procedure of transfer between two flights. I really can't say whether the procedure really takes 3 hours, but right now, there is no other solution.
