About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Cruising from Shanghai

Hi
I am a Australian citizen & are doing a cruise from Shanghai ending in Singapore
We wanted to arrive in Shanghai to spend 3 nights before cruise we would arrive 1.25 pm then spend 3 nights & board ship 4th day @ 12.30 pm then cruise departs Shanghai @ 8.00pm
Would I have to apply for a visa or could I be able for the 144 or 72

Just wanted to add on another question our next port after we depart Shanghai is South Korea we won’t be going back to Shanghai in China so you mean if we were not going back to China on the cruise or after & end in Singapore would it be ok for the 144
Can I ask what happens if you arrive in China with no visa & you did need one can they issue one at the airport

You won't have any problem when you arrive in China, although you wont get a visa at the airport. If you did need a visa then your airline should refuse your boarding for your flight to Shanghai.

Deb, your itinerary is eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in principle, but I will write down a couple of conditions your itinerary has to fulfill in order to be definitely eligible:

- Your flight from Australia to Shanghai should not have any additional landing within mainland China and in the country where your cruise will have its first port of call, immediately after Shanghai
- Your cruise is not allowed to have its first port of call, immediately after Shanghai, in mainland China

So, if the above conditions are fulfilled, your itinerary is definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai. 72 hour TWOV was replaced with 144 hour TWOV a couple of years ago.
