About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

HK Transit

Hi, I have booked a trip from Japan to Guangzhou that transits in Hong Kong, with two different airlines (then onward to Singapore a couple of days later). Will Chinese immigration in Guangzhou treat this as an entry that originated in Japan? I assume so, that would be the last country exited in my passport.

Also, do I advise the airline that I'm departing with in Japan, or the airline I'm flying on to Guangzhou with?

You are seen as arriving from Hong Kong, not Japan. You don’t need to inform any airline until the day of travel when they look in your passport for a visa.
