About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Is it possible to get a 72 or 144 hour visa from Country A to Shanghai, back to country A?

I am a British citizen with a permanent resident visa for Japan. I want to travel
to Shanghai from Japan, then the next day go on a cruise which returns to Japan. What kind of visa would I need for this?
Surely there must be some kind of visa available for someone to leave country A, stay in Shanghai for two days, then return to country A.
Is the only option to get a L visa? Seems like a lot of trouble for just a two day stay.

You need a tourist (L) visa or a different itinerary.

Yes there is some kind of visa and that is the L, so you basically answered your own question. The only other option is to enter Shanghai via a different country like fly Japan > Korea > Shanghai then take boat to Japan
