About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Long layover in Beijing

I am an Indian national residing in Hong Kong. I will be travelling to San Francisco from Hong Kong in December 2019. However, on my return flight I have a long layover (around 15hrs) n the Beijing airport. Do I need to apply for a visa for China for transit? Or will it be okay to stay inside the airport without the visa? Given the long layover, will it be possible to go outside the airport?

Thank you.

Every layover is fine if it is less than 24 hours long. In your case, your layover of 15 hours in Beijing is perfectly eligible for 24 hour visa free transit and you don't need any kind of visa for that. You can stay inside the airport, but you can also apply for 24 hour free entry permit upon your landing in Beijing. If your layover is during the night hours and you plan to spend a night in an accommodation outside the airport, you are advised to book your accommodation in advance and to have a booking confirmation in hard copy at the time of your application for the mentioned entry permit. Anyway, you should be aware that the issuing of entry permit is always upon discretion of immigration authorities.
