Long Layover in Shanghai

I am a Bulgarian citizen and I am flying from London to Bangkok in February next year. I have a layover in Shanghai for 18 hours in one direction and 14 hours when coming back from Bangkok to London. Am I allowed to get out of the airport for a quick walk around Shanghai during my stopover or I need to stay in the airport the whole time?

Thank you

During both of your layovers, you can apply for 24 hour free entry permit. You can do it upon your landing in Shanghai. In case if your layover is during the night hours and you would like to sleep in the hotel, you are advised to book your accommodation in advance and to have a confirmation of your booking with yourself in hard copy. This confirmation increases your chances to be granted an entry permit considerably. Anyway, you should be aware that the issuing of entry permit is not the passenger's right, but a privilege that depends entirely upon discretion of Chinese immigration official.
