Sandy, you did not offer any detail of your itinerary with the exception of the fact that you will have your layover in Kunming 10 hours long. OK, I will assume that your itinerary will look like this:
A country - B country (Kunming, China) - C country
If the above is true, then you are eligible for 24 hour visa free transit and you don't need any kind of visa.
I realize that you would like to exit the airport and spend your 10 hour layover in the hotel and have a normal rest. In this case, you will book your accommodation in advance and print out the confirmation. You will have this confirmation with you upon your landing in Kunming. Upon your landing, you will apply for 24 hour free entry permit and you will enclose your accommodation confirmation. Your chances to be allowed to exit the airport are very good, but you should always keep in mind that the issuing of entry permit is always upon discretion of immigration authorities.
