Richard, to be eligible for 144 (72 hour was replaced with 144 hour a couple of years ago) hour visa free transit in Shanghai area you have to fulfill the following conditions:
- Your cruise is not allowed to have its last port of call, immediately before Shanghai, in mainland China
- Your flight from Shanghai has to to be a nonstop one flying directly out of China to a third country and without any additional landing within mainland China and in the country where your cruise had its last port of call, immediately before Shanghai
To be more precise. For example, these are two possible eligible itineraries:
Japan - Shanghai - Canada
Hong Kong - Shanghai - Japan
As you can see, the immediate points, before and after Shanghai have to be in different countries!
OK, assuming that you will arrive in Shanghai by cruise from Japan, then you will declare to the Japanese immigration that you intend to travel to Canada via Shanghai using 144 hour visa free transit. You will have to present them the ticket from Shanghai to the third country in hard copy.
Upon your arrival in Shanghai, you will fill out arrival/departure card and a blue form at the 144 hour TWOV counter located within the cruise terminal. You will hand it to the Chinese immigration and after a short check, you will get a sticker in your passport and be allowed to enjoy your time in Shanghai until your departure to Canada or some other country of your choice.
