Do I need a visa if arriving in Shanghai by cruise ship and leaving the same day by plane back to US

You don't need a visa, but under two simple conditions:

- Your cruise should not have its last port of call, immediately before Shanghai, in mainland China
- Your flight from Shanghai to US should not have any additional landing within mainland China and in the country where your cruise had its last port of call, immediately before Shanghai

If the above conditions are fulfilled, you are eligible for 24 or 144 (depending on time you want to take for Shanghai) hour visa free transit in Shanghai area.
