About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

hong kong to guangzhou, is this possible or i need a visa

i have a US passport. currently i am in Hong Kong, and want to travel by train to Guangzhou for 2 days, then return to HK by train.

Of course you need a visa. Transit without visa doesn't apply because you're not in transit to a third country. Moreover, at Guangzhou it is only permitted for arrivals by air. You either need a visa or a different itinerary.
