Arriving in Shanghai for a cruise

I will be arriving in Shanghai one day before my cruise to Japan (arriving 10am day before cruise and leaving from Baoshan cruise port in Shanghai at 4:30 pm the following day). I will be staying one night in a hotel in Shanghai and I am not planning to leave the city.
I am a Polish passport holder and will be flying in from Birmingham via Amsterdam.
Do I qualify for a 144 hour visa exemption? Will this work both ways (on way back I am going straight from cruise ship to airport)

This is fine and you are eligible for 24/144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai twice, in principle. Anyway, to be completely certain about your eligibility, your itinerary has to fulfill the following conditions:

- Your flight from Europe to Shanghai should not have a stop of any kind within the mainland China and in Japan
- Your cruise should not have its first port of call, immediately after Shanghai, in mainland China
- Your cruise should not have its last port of call, immediately before Shanghai, in mainland China
- Your flight from Shanghai to some other country (probably to Europe) should not have a stop of any kind within mainland China and in Japan

If the above conditions are fulfilled, you are eligible for 144 hour visa free transit during your first arrival in Shanghai and for 24 hour visa free transit during your second arrival in Shanghai.
