About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

2 layovers in china

I have 2 layovers in China on route to Nepal. 17hrs in Shanghai and 21hours in Chengdu. Do I need a visa? If I don't have one all I ok to just stay in the airport?

You need a visa since there are 2 mainland Chinese landings and total time is over 24 hours. Immigration formalities are done at first port so there isn't a just stay inside the airport option to bypass visa requirement.
