About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Cruise stopover in shanghai

We are United Kingdom passport holders traveling on a cruise in April 2020 from Singapore calling at Vietnam, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Japan. We have 2 days in Shanghai. Is the 144-Hour Visa-Free Transit applicable to us and if so do we just get it at the cruise port or do we need to apply in advance ?

In case that the immediate points (ports of call), immediately before and after Shanghai, are in the cities outside of mainland China, like Hong Kong - Shanghai - Japan, you are definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai.

You don't need to do anything in advance. You will apply for the mentioned visa free transit scheme upon your arrival in Shanghai. You should just have a cruise ticket in hard copy along with your passport. You will fill out the relevant form and be allowed to explore the Shanghai area.
