Visa free transit required if not leaving airport? HKG > PEK > USA

On our trip from Hong Kong back to the US, we have a 5 hour layover in Beijing. The itinerary is Hainan airlines, though the first flight is operated by Hong Kong Airlines. With just 5 hours, we do not plan to leave the airport so my question is: If we do not plan to leave the airport, will we still need Visas and/or still need to go through the process of informing our carrier of intent to obtain a visa free transit in Beijing?

Perfect. Thank you so much for all you folks do on this website. It is incredibly usefully having this as a resource when trying to navigate all the complexities of the visa free transit program.
