About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

US-Shanghai-Japan-Shanghai-US

Hello,
We will be traveling from the US to Shanghai to board a cruise to Japan. The cruise departs and arrives from Port of Shanghai. We would like to spend 2 nights in Shanghai before the cruise, and another 3 nights in Shangha after the cruise. Do we qualify for the free 144 hour Visa?

Can you fly directly back to the US or do you have to go to a different country first before reaching your home country?

Yes, you are eligible for visa free transit in principle. Anyway, your itinerary has to fulfill the following conditions:

- Your cruise should not have its first and its last port call, immediately after and before Shanghai, in mainland China
- Your flights to and from Shanghai should not have any additional landing in mainland China and Japan

If the above conditions are fulfilled, you are perfectly eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai twice.

One more detail... Please, try to use correct terminology to avoid any possible misunderstandings. So, it is 144 hour visa free transit and not "free 144 hour visa"... As you can see, there is no visa at all.

Sue, what do you mean by "fly direct"? Where from?

I will assume that you ask whether you are allowed to fly directly from Shanghai to US. If I'm right, the answer is yes. You are definitely allowed to travel directly from Shanghai to US.
