About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Cruise - Transit with no visa

Hi!

I have a quick question, I am on a cruise leaving Shanghai for Japan. My visa specialist has assured me that I will covered by the transit provisions as I will be first going from UK to Shanghai and then Japan and on return Japan to Shanghai and then London.

I was told I needed the 144 hour transit exemption as this covered different entry/exit ports/airports. Is this correct, and does it make a difference that I have already applied online for this.

Robert

Assuming that you are UK citizen, everything that matters is your itinerary! So, if your itinerary is:

UK - Shanghai - Japan - Shanghai - UK

You are perfectly eligible for visa free transit in Shanghai twice. Whether it will be 24 or 144 hours depends on the period between your scheduled arrival in Shanghai and your scheduled departure from Shanghai.

Also, you should have in mind the following conditions:

- Your cruise should not have its first and its last port call, immediately after and before Shanghai, in mainland China
- Your flights to and from Shanghai should not have any additional landing in mainland China and Japan

If the above conditions are fulfilled and your itinerary is as mentioned above, you are perfectly eligible for visa free transit in Shanghai twice.

You really don't have to apply online for this option. You need your flight and cruise tickets in hard copy (e-tickets printouts) and that's it. You will do all the formalities upon landing in Shanghai.
