Just to be clear. My flight from Sydney has a 2 hour layover in Hong Kong and then goes to Shanghai. After my stay in Shanghai I will go 'back' to Hong Kong. Will this still work? i will not leave the HKIA during my 2 hour layover.

Thanks for getting back to me!

Unfortunately, your itinerary is not eligible for any kind of visa free transit schemes. As you can see by yourself, you are really not in transit, but in a visit to China since your itinerary is:

Hong Kong - Shanghai - Hong Kong

Within the rule for visa free transit, only the immediate points (stops) before and after your Chinese destination matter.

You will have to obtain a Chinese tourist (L) visa in advance or rearrange your flights if possible.
