About:Shanghai 15-day Visa-free Policy for Cruise Tour Groups

Wondering what type of Visa I need or if one of the Visa Free or short stay policy will work

Arriving via cruise ship in Dalian, and later days stopping for tours in Tianjin, Qingdao and Shanghai. Staying aboard the cruse ship every night. Total length of time between first and last stop about 8 days.

You need a Tourist (L) Visa for this itinerary. If you have US passport and it expires more than a year for now, you can apply for the 10 year multiple entry visa from the Chinese consulate in the USA. Its same cost as a single entry that other counties can get.
