About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

72 hour visa or 144 hour visa?

We ( 2 Australian citizens) are arriving at Pudong airport in Shanghai from Frankfurt, Germany at 11:55 on 30/10/2019 and departing ( confirmed flight and seat details) to Sydney, Australia at 20:05 from Pudong airport on 2/11/2019. We have accommodation booked in Shanghai at Radisson hotel. We are not intending to leave the area of Shanghai city.
I’m not sure whether we can apply for a 72 hour visa free period because from arrival time to departure time is 80 hours. However if we count the hours from 00:00 the day after our arrival ( as outlined ) we will have fewer than 72 hours in Shanghai.
I’m unsure as to which visa free period will apply to us and even though I could leave it until we arrive to enquire at the immigration desk, I want to be confident that our trip to Shanghai will not be spoiled because I didn’t understand the procedure. Would someone please confirm (a) that we are eligible to apply for this visa free period and (b) which period of time we should apply for when we land in Shanghai.
Thank you in anticipation Jude

The 72-hour visa waiver (not a visa) had been replaced by the 144-hour visa waiver for more than 3 years hence no longer exists, and the 144-hour one is what you will get. Keep in mind that visa waiver holders are allowed to visit neighboring provinces as well so you don't have to stay in Shanghai if you don't want to (this will also be stated on the visa waiver itself).

a) You are perfectly eligible for visa free transit
b) You can only apply for 144 hour visa free transit since there is no more 72 hour option in Shanghai

Please, just be relaxed because every single detail of your itinerary is fine. You should print out your flight tickets and accommodation booking and have it in hard copy.

Also, you are perfectly allowed to explore much wider area that Shanghai city since this option encompasses the provinces of Zhejiang and Jiangsu.
