About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Guangdong 144 hr visa free transit

Hi. I’m a British passport holder.
- Will I qualify for 144 hr visa free transit in Guangdong Province if my itinerary is as follows:
Kuala Lumpur - Jieyang Chaoshan Airport (direct flight), then Guangzhou to Hong Kong (direct train).

- Also, what does it actually mean in practical terms: “passengers should inform the carrier when boarding”. Inform them of my intention of applying for certain type of visa free transit or sth else? Should any arrangement be made online / during luggage check in or physically at the gate?
I just wonder since that point is not too clear if you know what I mean.
Please kindly advice.
Thank you.

Your itinerary is good. You will need your confirmed train ticket in your hand when you check in at Kuala Lumpur. It cannot be on the high speed rail. You inform your carrier when they check your passport for a Chinese visa, usually at the check-in desk and/or when boarding. There have been reports of AirAsia agents wrongly denying boarding, so leave plenty of time and escalate to a supervisor if necessary, especially since TWOV at SWA is recently introduced.

Thank you for your fast response.
It all seems clear to me, apart from the part that says I CANNOT have high speed rail tickets to HK booked prior to departure from KL.
Why is that?
Thank you.

High speed rail to Hong Kong requires a visa. But the "slow" train is fine.

Slow train means eg. Guangzhou East - Hong Kong (Hung Hom), correct?
Does that mean that there's Customs / Immigration Check at Guangzhou Station prior to boarding HK train?
Also, does one need to have physical tickets at hand or paper confirmation is fine as well, as long as it's paid & showing all personal details, seats, etc.?
Once again, thank you for your advise.

1) Yes
2) Yes
3) Paper confirmation is fine given that you must physically retrieve your ticket at the train station or selected locations in Guangzhou.

The reason why HSR is not eligible is because HSR passengers clear HK/Mainland Chinese immigration outside Mainland China soil (i.e., West Kowloon station in HK). For some odd reason the West Kowloon border crossing is the sole non-participant to Guangdong province's TWOV policy (virtually all other ports are included as eligible ports of exit).
