Do We Need Visas If On a Cruise from Shanghai Back to Shanghai?

We are flying non-stop from Vancouver to SH and staying one night in a hotel before boarding Spectrum of the Seas cruise around Japan (8 night cruise). Then the cruise ends in SH and we stay one more night in a hotel before flying non-stop to Tokyo. We fly home to Vancouver non-stop after about one week in Tokyo.
Do we need a visa?

Vancouver-SH-Japan is eligible for 144-hour visa-free transit. But Japan-SH-Tokyo is not eligible for it.

Arnie, you can enjoy 24/ 144h visa exemption in Shanghai twice.

Which is it? Does the return to Shanghai on the cruise ship and then flight to Tokyo disqualify us from the 24 / 144 hr visa exemption? Yolanda indicates that this will qualify for the exemption.

Japan-SH-Tokyo makes you are not eligible for the visa-free transit. While before you return to Shanghai, you are eligible for it.
