About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Does this count for US-Shanghai-Beijing-US?

My family of 3 are traveling from LAX to PVG (Shanghai) for 120 hrs (5 days), then traveling by train to Beijing for 72 hours (two days) and departing PEK to LAX. Do we still need visas because we are staying in mainland china?

You need a visa because you are not in transit to a third country. Plus the 144 hour transit does not allow travel between Shanghai and Beijing.
