About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

is my itinerary good for 72h free visa in Xi'an?

Milan-Helsinki-Xi'an-HongKong-Milan
is this ok for a 72h visa free in Xi'an?
I arrive in Xi'an at 6.00 in the morning the free visa start from the midnight of the next day?
after my visit in Xi'an I will stay in Hong Kong airport for few hours (i will not have an hotel booking in HongKong) and i will leave for Milan, this is possible? or I need an hotel booking in Hong Kong too?
Thanks!

Your itinerary is fine and you are perfectly eligible for 72 hour visa free transit in Xi'an. You are also right when you say that the validity of visa free transit starts from the midnight of the next day. So, you are allowed to stay in Xi'an almost 4 days because you are arriving in the early morning hours. That almost whole day is not calculated is your allowed 72 hours.

As far as Hong Kong is concerned, you are perfectly allowed to travel there without the hotel booking and also to depart within just a couple of hours. This is not a problem at all.

One more detail... Please, just try to use correct terminology because we are talking about 72 hour visa free transit and not about "72 hour free visa". There is not visa at all, so try to use exact wording to avoid any possible misunderstandings.

That blog is awfully wrong. Your itinerary is perfectly eligible for 72 hour visa free transit in Xi'an. Your tickets are fine since there is no any rule that would require a particular ticket option. You can have separate tickets, different airlines and similar. All that matters is your itinerary and your citizenship.

You are fine.
