About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

The 144 hour visa for a US-Beijing-Rome-US trip

I arrive in Beijing on Sept 7 at 5:15am arriving from the US. I depart to Italy on Sept 13 at 6:45 am. I am a US citizen. Do I need to obtain a formal Visa to China beforemy triporCan I use the 144 hr Rule? It looks like I should be OK. Just confirming with you.
