About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

144 hour visa free transit for Sydney - Shanghai - Hong Kong

A gentleman named zupan and a lady called Nancy answered my enquiry
Just to confirm my trip.
Sydney Australia to Shanghai 5 days.
Shanghai to a Hong Kong by sleeper train .
Hong Kong to Sydney.
Would all that quality for the 144 hour visa free transit.
I presume as told I would have to purchase the Train ticket which they would send to me as a @ which I would show to customs and pick up the hard copy from my hotel .
I am getting conflicting advice here in Australia and just would like to confirm

Part one:

Jack, your itinerary is definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit. Here is what you should do:

1. You will book or have already booked your plane ticket from Sydney to Shanghai, but without any additional landing within mainland China and Hong Kong
2. You will book, you can do it on this website, the train tickets as you have mentioned in your post. Again, be careful and choose Shanghai (without any addition) as your departure point and Hong Kong Hung Hom as your arrival point. This is the train Z99B. You are right when you say that your real, paper ticket will be sent to the hotel of your choice and you will receive an e-confirmation that is a valid document for all the authorities concerned with the process.
3. Upon your check-in in Australia, you will declare that you are traveling to Hong Kong via Shanghai using 144 hour visa free transit. You will present your tickets and an e-confirmation in hard copy. Here you can expect that check-in staff show some lack of knowledge because they are not used to see train tickets as a valid proof for this visa free transit option. Anyway, they will consult Timatic and there they will see that your itinerary is perfectly eligible. You will receive your boarding pass and that's it.

Part two:

4. Upon your arrival in Shanghai, you will fill out the blue form and hand it over at the 144 hour counter. After that, you will receive a sticker in your passport and be allowed to leave the airport.
5. Your ticket will wait for you in the hotel of your choice.
6. The reason why this particular train is eligible for 144 hour visa free transit is the fact that you will clear all the mainland Chinese exit formalities at the Shanghai railway station, so you will be de jure out of mainland China immediately your board the train.

To conclude, you are perfectly eligible for this itinerary and all those who claim that you are not, they are poorly informed about the very basics of visa free transit mainland China policy.
