About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Cruise from Shanghai to Japan

We fly into Shanghai from Australia on 15th August. we then leave for 8 day cruise around Japan on 18th August. we then arrive back in Shanghai on 26th August and fly out the same day back to Australia. Do we qualify for the 144 hour visa free exemption?

Yes, you are eligible for 24/144 hour visa free transit in principle, but your itinerary has to fulfill the following conditions:

1. Your flights to/from Shanghai should not have any additional landing within mainland China and Japan
2. Your cruise should not have any port call in mainland China immediately after and immediately before your departure/arrival from/in Shanghai.

If these requirements are met, you are eligible for 144 TWOV during your first arrival in Shanghai and probably for 24 hour TWOV during your second arrival in Shanghai because I assume that you will need less than 24 hours to make a transfer between your cruise and the airport.
